Pet Chimp goes Berserk and Injures Woman

You might want to hold off and not get that cute chimpanzee you might have been thinking about getting for a pet.

According to CNN, a woman has been attacked at a friend’s home in Stamford, Conecticut. She has suffered severe life threatening injuries.

Charla Nash, 55, went over to her friend Sandra Herold’s house, to help her capture the chimp because it had escaped from the house. Nash had just gotten out of her car when the chimp, whose name is Travis, began to attackĀ  and bite her; causing serious injuries to her face, neck and hands.

Herold tried to pull Travis off Nash, but was unsuccessful. She then ran into the house and called 911. Herold then grabbed a butcher knife and stabbed the chimp and hit him with a shovel. None of this slowed Travis down.

When the Stamford police arrived they had to shoot Travis because he attacked a police officer inside his cruiser. Travis then escaped into the house and according to Captain Rich Conklin, they found the chimpanzee dead inside his bedroom when they entered the house.

According to Conklin, Travis was 14 years old and weighed approximately 200 pounds. He was said to have been like a child to Herold. Conklin also said that this wasn’t the first time that Travis had escaped. He said that Travis had escaped in 2003 and wreaked havoc on the streets of Stamford.

In an earlier interview with CNN, Wildlife expert Jeff Corwin, stated that an adult chimpanzee weighing about 150 pounds is three to seven times stronger than a human being. He also went on to say:

“The thing about chimpanzees is, we sort of look at them through our rose-colored cultural glasses of the cute little chimp in the ‘Tarzan’ movie. Those are very young chimps. Chimps grow up, they become very powerful. They are very complex in their behavior. They have a whole range of emotions, including violence and anger.”
