Controversy swirled on Friday after it was learned that a Southern California woman, who gave birth to octuplets, already had six children under the age of 7 at home. According to the Los Angeles Times the woman’s mother, Angela Suleman, told the newspaper that her daughter only wanted one more girl.

The newspaper also said that the grandmother told them that her daughter conceived the octuplets through a fertility program and all the octuplets were from the same sperm donor. She also said that her daughter is divorced, and the ex-husband is not the father. Suleman was also quoted as saying:

“And look what happened. Octuplets. Dear God.” She also went on to say that her daughter, “is not evil, but she is obsessed with children. She loves children, she is very good with children, but obviously she overdid herself.”

According to sources, the woman went to the hospital when she was 12-weeks pregnant. Dr. Harold Henry,  part of the team that delivered the babies said:

“The options were to continue the pregnancy or to selectively abort. The patient chose to continue the pregnancy.”

Henry also went on to say:

“Our goal is to provide the best possible care, no matter what the situation or circumstances are. What I do is just explain the facts. I always talk about the risks. The mother weighs those options, and she chooses the option based on spiritual or personal makeup.”

Meanwhile, some fertility experts were appalled that a woman who already had six children, was implanted with eight embryo’s. Dr. David Adamson, director of Fertility Physicians of Northern California,  is reported as saying:

” I have never provided fertility treatment to a woman with six children, or even heard of a similar case.”

The octuplets’ mother has not been identified; nor has her fertility doctor.
